The conservation goals for the Galisteo Basin Preserve include the permanent protection of the property's scenic, recreational, and environmental resources for the benefit of visitors and residents of nearby communities, as well as for the human and wildlife population of the Preserve.

The 12,800-acre Preserve will be overlaid with a conservation easement—guaranteeing that more than 96 percent of the Preserve's land resources will be permanently protected for future generations.

A critical planning objective of the initiative is the development of a regional trail system—one that will include more than 30 miles of publicly accessible hiking, biking, and equestrian paths. Habitat restoration within the Preserve's primary watershed and grassland areas is another conservation priority. Financing for the trail development and restoration work will come from a Commonweal-provided endowment and "real estate transfer fees" from property sales.
